Among other storm damage in the area, strong winds knock down a powerline in Bedford

BEDFORD Co., Va. (WSET) -- Thunderstorms across the area caused damage including strong winds knocking down a powerline in Bedford County.

Powerlines lay across Cottontown Road off of Route 221.

Strong winds caused a tree to knock down a powerline, creating a vehicle back up.

Crews were on site working to remove the powerline and get traffic moving.

Crews are headed to Stewartville Road in Bedford County where trees have fallen across the road.

Trees are down in Lynchburg, Bedford County at Jordantown Road and in Botetourt County at Blacksburg Road.

"You ain't gonna beat Mother Nature," said Aaron Kirk, a resident. "It is what it is."

He told us about the storm damage at his home up the road on Regency Drive.

“It blew over my trees in my yard, blew the roof off of my storage building,“ said Hurt.

Crews had picked up most of the trees blocking roads.

But several homes had lots of debris.

Residents say the storm could have been much worse.

Kirk says he was out having dinner before coming home to downed powerlines and trees.

He’s lived here for 41 years and says it’s an eye full.

“I’ve been through some storms, and it’s howled through here, but this is the worst I’ve seen," said Kirk. "I don’t know what happened.”

Power outages have also accumulated because of the storms.

As of 9:00 p.m., the storm had left more than 4,000 customers in Bedford County without power.

Crews were hard at work but told people it could take hours for things to get back to normal in several areas.

Drivers, like E.B. Hurt, had to take a detour here at Turner Branch Road and Pinewood Drive.

“I couldn’t believe how bad it was," said Hurt. "I was up at Dollar General, and I knew it was bad."

According to AEP, a total of 8,430 customers are without power including Roanoke, Martinsville and Lynchburg.

“I guess everybody’s safe, and we’re lucky," said Kirk. "That’s what it’s all about."
